ho installato Linux Mandrake 9.0 su portatile, ma il sistema non vede il modem.

modem: ESS ES56 CVM-PI fax/modem
macchina: HP OmniBook XE3

suggerimenti?

No, intendo il Chipset... E' un win modem?!..
Ho sentito che l'unico che è riuscito a farlo andare ha usato Knoppix!

Hai provato a mettere il modem davanti allo schermo???

Dovresti innanzitutto cercare se esistono driver specifici per quel modem, altrimenti prova con qualche driver un po' più scrauso per il chipset che monta il tuo modem...

grazie gwath e neo per i suggerimenti.
avevo già visitato quel sito, ma purtroppo i link interni non fungono.
per risolvere ho anche fatto un upgrade a mandrake 10, risultato: il sistema vede il modem ma dice che è occupato.

Off-Topic:
4,90€ mandrake 10, mica male vero?


a costo di leggermi gli howto in aramaico, risolverò!

ovviamente se mi volete evitare lo sbattimento, AIUTATEMI!

Ma aspetta... Non voglio certo fare l'esperto, perchè so che sono assai un newbie, però so che se è un WinModem l'avrai dura dura... In teoria non è proprio supportato... Se non come ti dicevo da Knoppix... Boh se hai un riscrivibile piazzagli sopra una knoppix (che puoi trovare qui: www.isolinux.org) e prova! Tanto per vedere!

www.smlink.com che funzionano alla grande con quasi tutti i modem AMR :)

niente da fare, ho provato il work-around ma niente.
dice: "...il kernel è stato compilato con una versione di gcc troppo recente"

Secondo voi, posso sostituirmi il modem interno del portatile da solo, senza fare danni?
nessuno di voi l'ha mai fatto?
