Debian: impostare mtu su eth0

Come crincio si imposta il valore mtu sull'interfaccia eth0 in modo permanente senza che venga "resettato" ogni volta che riavvio?

Ho provato ad inserirlo in /etc/network/interface come valore "iface eth0 inet mtu 1492 dhcp", ma in quest'ultimo caso la rete non vuole neanche saperne di essere attivata...nei log non appare neanche un errore a riguardo.
Vorrei evitare di usare uno script "ifconfig eth0 mtu 1492" dato che comporterebbe un ritardo di 6 secondi per la disattivazione e la riattivazione della rete.

Nel kernel 2.4, su non sò quale distro, si poteva modificare il file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 impostando manualmente l'mtu.

In debian e con kernel 2.6 tale possibilità non esiste (non c'è proprio la cartella sysconfig, e non c'è il comanto ifcfg).
