il problema è che directory di destinazione deve esistere altrimenti si ha un errore esempio:

cp -r /usr/adm /tmp ------ tutto ok

cp -r /usr/adm /tmp/usr ---- errore

sia in ambiente DOS di windows che in linux eventuali sotto_directory vengonn create automaticamente
