dovrebbe risolvere molti dei tuoi dubbi.

Come interfaccia grafica..Bhe direi sicuramente gnome se hai bisogno di un desktop. la 2.4 è molto carina...

Se non hai bisogno di tanti ammenicoli e accessori direi che *box o windowmaker sono l'ideale...

Se vuoi andare easy easy..Disinstalla X e lavora da bash (che ha tutto quello che un programmatore ha bisogno) :D

A parte i pacchetti propri di Gnome devi rimuovere anche tutto ciò che essi avevano caricato come dipendenza (se vuoi fare pulizia si intende) stando attento che non siano necessari anche ad applicazioni che hai installato ma che non sono di Gnome...
La disinstallazione completa è un pò un macello....

basta usare APT:
# apt-get remove gnome-desktop

Questi problemi non si hanno con un WM serio tipo Fluxbox o WindowMaker... :D

Grazie al cielo Gome e KDE non sono solo dei semplici WM... :)

lol..era una curiosità..
Tempo fa leggevo che RedHat e Debian volevano unirsi per creare una distro basata sull'archiettetura debian ma userfriendly.

Se fedora incorpora apt-get [sistema per la gestione dei pacchetti] allora è il parto di quell'idea.

E' disponibile come add-on esterno (apt4rpm), anche se nativamente utilizza yum.
up2date (eredità di RedHat) comunque supporta entrambi i repositories, sia yum che apt.
