Un iframe è un frame inline, cioè definito in un punto qualsiasi interno ad una pagina. Occhio alla compatibilità, che sui sistemi Microsoft è perfetta, ma che altrove lascia un pò a desiderare (per ovvi motivi). Nell'iframe puoi inserire tu manualmente dell'html tra i tag <iframe></iframe> oppure richiamare una pagina .htm esistente con l'attributo src="". Puoi usarlo, come tutti gli altri frame, come obiettivo per link esistenti.

Più di così non so cosa dirti...
Prova a guardare anche il tag Object che è molto simile, ma più supportato!

Nelle ultime specifiche del W3C è entrato anche l'IFRAME... infatti inizia ad essere supportato correttamente anche su browser non made-in-M$
