Dal momento che i pessimisti sono portati ad astrarre selettivamente la realtà ignorandone gli aspetti positivi, è uno stratagemma (blando, per carità, non funziona sempre) per rendere il loro approccio leggermente più realistico. So benissimo che i problemi non scompaiono, ma da depressi si risolvono con più difficoltà.
