se usi un router ethernet ci pensa lui a fare la connessione al provider tramite PPPoE e in linux tiri solo su l'interfaccia ed esegui un dhcp client.
Oppure imposti a mano IP, subnet e IP del gateway (il router)

Se hai un modem ethernet, c'e' un comodissimo programma (rp-pppoe) che ti gestisce la connessione adsl. Con un modem usb non so

Si, se vuoi accedere da fuori devi poter assolutamente configuarare le porte sul router...
